About Alicut...
My
name is Alice (Ali) Logeais. I married Mike sixteen years ago and
we have two daughters, Sara, age 15 and Abby, age 13. As our daughters
have become more independent my role as mom has changed giving me
more of an opportunity to figure out what it is I want to be when
I grow up. It only took 40 years, but... AliCut was born.
It started out about eight years ago when I spent
an afternoon with my Gram'ma. She had been sending out beautifully
hand-cut Christmas cards for several years and I asked if she would
teach me the basics of how to do Scherenschnitte (Papercutting).
She had learned it because when her parents immigrated here they
could only bring the essentials. Which meant that once the house
was built and all set up there were no pictures for their walls.
They began creating their own by cutting paper, depicting traditions
and stories from the old coutry. Gram'ma was excited to pass the
craft on to another generation. So, we spent the afternoon drinking
coffee, telling stories, laughing, and learning to cut pictures.
As we were preparing to leave, Gram'ma turned and very ceremoniously
picked up her box of papercutting supplies, handed it to me saying
"Please carry on, I can't see well enough to do this anymore."
With tears streaming down my face, I did my best to thank her for
the most incredible gift I have ever received.
After
many months of cutting cards from Gram'ma's patterns and several
other patterns that I had purchased, I was trying to think of a
really special gift for one of my best friends (who also happens
to be my sister in law). I started with a photograph and my computer,
made a pattern and started cutting. I ended up with a cutting of
our family cabin in Northern Minnesota where she and I have spent
about a month together every summer for the last 30 years. I've
done several different cuttings of our cabin and decided I needed
a little more objective opinion of my work. So, I did a cutting
for my favorite Aunt, of their cabin. If had the desired effect,
she admits I'm her favorite neice! Actually, she'd never admit that,
but she really liked the cutting!
From there I started going through all of the photographs
I have taken and started making patterns and cuttings. In the last
year or so, several of my nephews seem to have started a competition
amongst each other to take a photograph that I can't cut. Each one
is an excellent photographer, so I've had more than one challenging
pattern!
Custom cuts of cabins, homesteads, farms, favorite
places, or favorite people done from your photographs are my specialty.
Also available are Birds, Wildlife, North Country Scenes, and Holiday
Cuttings in various sizes, in silhouette or color.
